Deer Valley Education Foundation (DVEF) Announces Space Academy Scholarship Recipients

Christian Junkar, 8th grader at Anthem School, Rachel Duke, 7th grader at Sierra Verde School, and Nicole Oaida, 7th grader at Stetson Hills School were all awarded scholarships to attend Space Academy in Huntsville, Alabama.  Receiving a $50 US saving bond for their exceptional essays are runners-up Ashley Kirkpatrick, 7th grade, Canyon Springs School, Jordan Hughes 8th grade, Diamond Canyon School,  Noah Enos, 7th grader at Diamond Canyon, and Rachel Flynn and Dominique Lamphere, both 7th graders at Sunset Ridge School.  The 2010 Space Academy Scholarship recipients were recognized at the DVUSD Governing Board meeting on Tuesday, April 27th.

Applicants submitted an essay to The Deer Valley Education Foundation outlining “Why I Want to Attend Space Academy.”  Semi-finalists were interviewed by an independent panel of judges.  "It is always a very difficult decision who the scholarship recipients should be," stated Charly Filipek, President of the Deer Valley Education Foundation Board.  “Every essay we received was so well written, and all of the semi-finalists interviewed did such a great job!  Each of these students and their families, along with their schools, should be very proud.”   Partial funding for these scholarships came from Glendale Chamber of Commerce.

Space Academy is an increased intensity program of astronaut and mission training and academics.  Simulated missions to a space station and crew rotation highlight the week.  Trainees who want to be astronauts must learn to think like astronauts.  Participants will have three fields of specialized study to choose from: aviation, space, and robotics.  Team-building skills, Space Simulators and Space Shuttle Mission trainings are just a few of the activities they will experience.
